SIGIRIYA
Sigiriya Rock Fortress – is home to the 5th Century “Fortress in the Sky” which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the Island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the fortress. Within its triple-moated defence the huge rock rises almost to a sheer height of 500ft. On its summit are the foundations of what was once a great and sumptuous palace and gardens complete with swimming pool. On one of the stairways the only known ancient work of Sinhala secular painting survived in the form of Frescoes of life sized damsels in all the freshness and delicacy of their original color.
Dambulla Cave Temple is a vast isolated rock outcrop which towers about 600ft.above the plain. It
stands bare and black exposed to the scorching sun, very little of it sheltered by woodland, in this rock is
a complex of caves, which house the historic rock temple of Dambulla. This is one of the oldest Buddhist
shrines in Sri Lanka .It is composed of five caves, which have been converted into shrine rooms. Within
these rooms in housed a collection of one hundred and fifty statures of the Buddha, and several more of
deities, other personages of the Buddhist order and the country’s history.
